Bio
Phakiso Tlali is the Managing Director of Phallang Egg Enterprise, a black-owned egg production business. Established in 2017, with a rapid growth rate over the years, they continuously seek to produce and market quality eggs at the lowest cost to consumers. Their passionate team comprises experienced individuals across a broad spectrum of layer operations management and marketing services. Currently, Phallang Egg Enterprise has a capacity of 3 400 layers and is in the process of applying for an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to increase its capacity to 7 000 layers by 2024. Their business is driven by the vision to become the leading producer of high-quality eggs in South Africa.

Phallang Egg Enterprise

Phallang Egg Enterprise was established to address the need for a nutritionally adequate egg diet through a sustainable system that maximises community self-reliance. Their primary objective: Ensuring quality eggs are available to customers at an affordable price.

Currently, the business has 3 400 layers. Egg production is influenced by various factors including feed quality, sunlight exposure, genetics and overall health. Over the lifespan of layer birds, they maintain an average daily production of 85%, resulting in a capacity to produce 2 890 eggs per day. Eggs are packaged and sold in trays of 30 units each.

In response to the growing demand for food affordability, food availability, food quality and safety and natural resource resilience, Phallang Egg Enterprise is in the process of applying for an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to double their layer capacity by 2024. This will help ensure they grow the business while providing high-quality and affordable eggs at a time when many communities are facing unemployment due to the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The business expansion will create jobs and ultimately better household food security.
